Shopping and the Markets

Chiang Mai has markets, markets, markets! If you miss the shopping malls you will also find two malls with all the western shops and food that you have at home. Central Mall (Kad Suan Laew) located in the heart of Chiang Mai and the Central Airport Plaza is (you guessed it) located near the airport.

Some of the more popular local markets are described below but you will find markets everywhere. The morning markets start early (5-6 am). These markets are a great place to see Monks on their daily alms rounds.

Sunday Market is located on the Royal Ave.(Ratchadamnern Road) inside the old city of Chiang Mai

The Sunday market in Chiang Mai should not to be missed. Ratchadamnern Road is closed to all vehicles and there are vendors selling every type and selection of high quality local goods. You will not recognize this street as it fills with thousands of people.

The market starts at around 3 pm, gets very busy around 7 pm and closes around 10 pm. So arrive early and remember your bargaining skills. Clothes, Art, Silk crafts and many gifts are available.

Along the sidewalks and in most side streets you will find some of the best Thai Massage therapists offering traditional Thai massage and foot massage - the perfect time to recharge for more shopping.

The temples that are located in the market area also offer a selection of Thai food and products and a variety of restaurants.

Night Bazaar is a huge market covering a long outdoor stretch of Chang Khlan Road between Tha Phae Road and Si Donchai Road. The actual Vieng Ping Night Bazaar comprises a three -storey mezzanine arcade where quality antiques, clothing and crafts can be found. Thousands of market stalls fill more than three blocks of sidewalks offering everything…fake Rolex’s, Billabong, La Coste and Diesel clothing, handbags of various designers, jewelry, Samari Swords, silk goods, pashminas and more - but don’t be fooled and take all claims with a pinch of salt and always bargain.

There are many restaurants in and around the markets offering a wide variety of foods including Italian, Indian, Steak houses, Falafels. There are even Mc Donald’s, Burger King and a Subway if you’re in need of a western fix.

Warorot Market (Kad Luang) - north of Nawarat Bridge and west of the Ping River between Thapae Roads and Chang Moi Road. This sprawling labyrinth of shops and large outdoor market is where the locals shop. Here you will find fabrics, clothes, herbs and spices particularly good for those taking Thai Cookery classes or any of the assortments of herbal massage classes available in Chiang Mai.

Flower market Near the Warorot Market and adjacent to the Ping River is the beautiful Flower market. Here you will be stunned by the variety and beauty of flowers available and the low cost.
